Gaming News Week 08

Cartoon Network Games Removed

Bad news for Cartoon Network fans: Warner Bros. Discovery’s division is once again removing games from digital storefronts. Titles like Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time, OK K.O.! Let’s Play Heroes, and Steven Universe: Unleash the Light, among others, are no longer available on Steam and other platforms.

These games were quietly taken down on December 23, 2024, without any prior notice. A generic message now appears on their pages, stating that the games will no longer be available for sale.

Just a few months ago, Warner Bros. also shut down the Cartoon Network website and redirected visitors to the MAX platform. It’s unclear what will happen next.

Yakuza Mobile Pre-Registrations

SEGA’s new mobile game, City of Wars, powered by the Yakuza franchise, is now available for pre-registration in select regions.

This strategy simulation game, based on the popular Yakuza series, allows players to step into the shoes of a Yakuza boss. You’ll be joined by iconic characters like Kiryu Kazuma, Kasuga Ichiban, and Majima Goro as you control territories across the multi-map of Bliss Isle, secure resources, and form alliances. Players can also plan infiltrations, ambushes, and raids against enemies.

Unique features include romance mechanics, where you can date beautiful women and exchange gifts to increase intimacy. These characters will become powerful allies during gameplay.

We’ll see how the game fares when it launches in the spring of 2025.

Rockstar Games New Leaks

The second trailer for GTA 6 didn’t release on December 27th as expected, but there’s some good news—merchandise discounts are currently available.

On Reddit, a new leak from Rockstar Games has surfaced. Some old documents were leaked, reportedly because someone attempted to sell them for profit. To counter this, another individual shared the documents for free. These consist primarily of old GTA design documents, including material from San Andreas and Vice City Stories.

Interestingly, GTA 3 was originally planned to feature an online system with detailed elements such as character customization, factions, a skill system, co-op gameplay, and troop mechanics. This demonstrates that the online features seen in GTA today weren’t just influenced by modern trends—they’ve been in development since the era of GTA 3.

Palworld Receives New Update

PalWorld has launched the Faebreak update, bringing a host of exciting new features, including new areas, pals, buildings, a hardcore mode, expeditions, and research.

The update introduces Faebreak Island, a massive new area that is six times larger than Sakurajima Island. Here, players can discover new pals and gather unique crafting materials like Hexolite Quartz, which can be used to create items such as double-jump boots. Additionally, a new faction, the Faebreak Warriors, has been added.

In hardcore mode, the stakes are higher as both player and pal deaths are permanent. Random Pal mode adds an extra layer of unpredictability by randomizing pal spawns. Predator Pals, powerful versions of regular pals, have also been introduced. These formidable creatures drop rare resources but require a strong team and upgraded weapons to defeat.

The update also features a new research mechanic, which unlocks passives and rewards that enhance base building and crafting speed.

Black Myth: Wukong Developers ‘Crying’

As we know, Black Myth: Wukong did not win Game of the Year this year. There are now reports that the developers were very upset by this outcome. Elana Prince, who has worked with Santa Monica on God of War, attended The Game Awards and mentioned in a stream that when Astro Bot won, a member of the Black Myth: Wukong team was seen crying. According to her, this reaction was unusual because, in the industry, people typically don’t take Game of the Year so seriously.

Some people compared this situation to Spider-Man 2, which didn’t win any awards last year, and there were also some who were unhappy that Baldur’s Gate 3 won. On the other hand, Charles Young, the former Editor-in-Chief of IGN China, said he hadn’t seen anything like this and suggested it might have been a case of mistaken identity.

Feng Ji, a Black Myth: Wukong producer, expressed confusion about the criteria for selecting a Game of the Year winner, revealing that he had written a speech for the award two years ago. Before the Game of the Year award was presented, the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3 spoke about how games made with both passion and profit are honored, which may have been misunderstood by some Chinese gamers. This led to some backlash against Black Myth: Wukong‘s developers, with gamers accusing them of arrogance for preparing their speech so far in advance.

Meanwhile, others defended the Black Myth: Wukong team, pointing out their immense passion and the fact that their first single-player game was a major success, having taken seven years to develop. Some even argued that the tone of their speech was misunderstood due to poor translation, and that they were just joking.

After trying out Astro Bot, it became clear that comparing the two games was like comparing apples to oranges. Reading the criteria for Game of the Year helped clarify that factors like sales and popularity aren’t considered when selecting a winner.

Some argue that Black Myth: Wukong received the lowest user ratings on Metacritic among all the Game of the Year nominees, while Astro Bot received the highest. Notably, games like Silent Hill 2 Remake, Space Marine 2, and Helldivers 2 weren’t even nominated for Game of the Year, and the nomination of a DLC instead of these games was controversial in itself.

Ultimately, the Game of the Year debate continues every year. It’s impossible to satisfy everyone with one award show. Both Black Myth: Wukong and Astro Bot are masterpieces in their own right. Black Myth: Wukong represents the rise of high-quality single-player Chinese games and serves as an inspiration for developers worldwide, especially in India, showing how a new studio can create such a major game. On the other hand, Astro Bot is Team SOB’s first major success, and despite their studio being founded in 2012 with the goal of making demos, they managed to create one of the highest-rated games of the year.

Arcane Cost $250 Million To Riot

A new report is going viral, revealing that Riot Games spent $250 million to create the Arcane series. Unfortunately, they were unable to recover this cost, as Netflix only paid $3 million per episode, with Tencent contributing an additional $3 million per episode. This means the total earnings from the show didn’t even cover half of the production costs.

Riot had hoped that Arcane would drive more League of Legends players to the game, leading to increased sales of skins that could help recover the investment. However, this didn’t materialize. Even after the release of Arcane-themed skins in the game following season 1, the financial boost was minimal, and many criticized the animated series as a significant financial loss.

In response, Riot’s co-founder explained that people today tend to focus too much on short-term profits, while their vision is long-term. He stated that they didn’t create Arcane to sell skins, but rather, they sell skins in order to fund projects like Arcane. This perspective resonated with many, as Arcane is widely regarded as one of the best animated series.

Dead Space 4 Rejected By EA

In an interview, Glenn Schofield revealed that he pitched Dead Space 4 to EA, but it was rejected because the game would require selling a large number of copies to be profitable, which was considered a big risk. The original creators noted that companies today are hesitant to take on new ideas.

STALKER 2 Surprise Success

Stalker 2 has surpassed 1 million sales, with many players enjoying it through Game Pass. Even in Ukraine, the game has already become profitable. GSC Game World has stated that their audience base has significantly grown, and they plan to improve the game by adding previously cut ideas, expanding its content, and even exploring the possibility of a Netflix series.

It’s remarkable to see that, despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, the developers were able to create such a successful game.

Fortnite Collaboration With Cyberpunk 2077

Fortnite‘s next collaboration is with Cyberpunk 2077, bringing Johnny Silverhand and Female V into the game.

The Witcher 3 Real Age Of Geralt

According to the new book by The Witcher series author, it has been revealed that Geralt was 61 years old in The Witcher 3 and 64 in the Blood and Wine DLC. This indicates a 38-year age gap between him and Yennefer.

In contrast, according to the timeline of the Netflix series, Geralt is only 20 years old, which doesn’t align with Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the character. Now, we’ll have to wait and see when The Witcher 4 is set and what the ages of the characters will be in the new game.
